Dr. Moses Collier Young, a devoted physician, loving father, and respected member of his community, lived a life marked by purpose, service, and compassion. Born as Mose Collier Young, Jr., in Greenville, Mississippi, he was the first of nine children of the late Reverend Mose Collier Young, Sr., and the late Lizzie Mae (Carroll) Young, both formerly of Leland, Mississippi. From an early age, Moses demonstrated both academic excellence and a strong drive to achieve. He confessed a hope in Christ at an early age and was baptized on May 13, 1960, by the late Reverend C.R. Raymond, pastor of New Jerusalem M.B. Church in Greenville.
He received his early education at Lucy L. Webb Elementary School and later attended Coleman High School and T.L. Weston High School, where he graduated as Salutatorian in 1967. Although he once humorously declared in his high school yearbook that he would become a “vagabond,” his life’s journey reflected a far greater calling.
Having developed a passion for medicine, Moses pursued higher education with focus, determination, and excellence. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Jackson State College (now University), completed post-baccalaureate studies at the University of Wisconsin at Madison and at Harvard University, received his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine, and completed his residency through the Tulane University Affiliated Hospital Program. He ultimately fulfilled his dream of becoming an Internal Medicine physician.
Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Young touched countless lives. His patients, colleagues, and community knew him as a physician who took the Hippocratic Oath seriously, providing care with integrity, dedication, and compassion. He practiced medicine in Louisiana and Mississippi, retiring in 2019 as Chief Medical Officer of the Jefferson Comprehensive Health Center in Fayette, Mississippi. Beyond his professional commitments, Dr. Young embraced life to the fullest. An avid traveler, he journeyed to many countries around the world, including Kenya, London, Rome and Paris. He was a passionate fan of the Philadelphia Eagles, a competitive ping pong player, and enjoyed trying his luck at a good game of Keno.
On Sunday, April 12, 2026, Dr. Young peacefully transitioned from this earthly life at the age of 76 at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson, Mississippi. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Reverend Mose C. Young, Sr., and Mrs. Lizzie Mae Young. He leaves to cherish his memory: two daughters, Mitzi Mar’Sha Lewers Baawo (Dr. Albert Baawo, Jr.) of Atlanta, Georgia, and Rachel A. Young Turner (Devin Turner) of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; one cherished granddaughter, Aurora Ivy Turner of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; two sisters, Gilda Y. Sanford (James Sanford) of Greenville, Mississippi, and Lula Young Lee (Troy Lee) of Las Vegas, Nevada; and six brothers, Willie Arthur Young of Las Vegas, Nevada, Delaine Young of San Diego, California, Attorney Oliver C. Young (Attorney Mary Jo Lattimore-Young) of Buffalo, New York, Michael D. Young (Alice Young) of North Las Vegas, Nevada, Joseph D. Young of Las Vegas, Nevada, and David H. Young of Vicksburg, Mississippi. He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, colleagues, and dear friends.
The family would also like to extend heartfelt gratitude to those who showed unwavering love and support. Special thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Lee Screws of Vicksburg, Mississippi, his devoted neighbors; Mrs. Rosie Jackson of Port Gibson, Mississippi, his nurse; Mrs. Stacey Flowers, RN; his cherished “Ping Pong buddies” of Vicksburg; Mr. Alford Perryman of Texas, a valued colleague; Landmark Lifestyles Assisted Living; and Dr. Ruth Fredericks. Your presence, care, and compassion meant more than words can express. Dr. Young’s life was one of impact, honor, and service. His legacy will live on through the lives he touched, the family he loved, and the community he faithfully served.
