Lurline Alexander Hicks Sanders-Green, a remarkable woman whose legacy of love and service will forever resonate in the hearts of those she touched, passed away peacefully on October 30, 2025, at the age of 78. Born on April 11, 1947, Lurline dedicated her life to caring for others, working tirelessly as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) for over 33 years. Her work at various facilities, including Kuhn Memorial Hospital and Heritage House Nursing Home, was marked by compassion and commitment, traits that were hallmarks of her character.
Lurline's pride extended beyond her career; she was a devoted family woman who leaves to cherish her memories her loving husband, Marion Green, Sr. She was the proud mother of four children: Arthur Hicks, Sr. of Vicksburg, MS; Douglas (Phyllis) Sanders of Jackson, MS; Dayatra (Tromale) Guy of Lake Charles, LA; Marion Green, Jr. of Vicksburg, MS and adopted son Barry (Sophia) D. Moore.
Lurline's family grew with the addition of her grandchildren, who were the light of her life: Arthur Hicks, Jr., Jordan Hicks, Alana Cole, Dreshon Sanders, Skyla Sanders, Jazmin Green, Braylon Green, Jonas Green, Kitana Green, Marion (Trey) Green, III., Dana Bland, Jonathan Reed, Asia Meekins, Joshua (Matiqua) Dixon, Tyeisha Hicks, and Ocean Moore.
A resilient spirit, Lurline was not just a role model for her family but also for her community. She actively participated in the Freedom Riders and was a steadfast member of the NAACP. As a charter member of the MLK committee, she served with distinction as chairwoman for an impressive 13 years. Her dedication was further demonstrated through her involvement with the Mississippi Action for Progress and serving on the election committee as a poll manager and city election commissioner, roles she undertook with integrity and enthusiasm.
Lurline is survived by her beloved twin sister, Jurline Howard of Detroit, MI, and a very special niece, “The General” Donna Williams of Vicksburg, MS. She is also remembered fondly by a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and cherished friends who were fortunate to share in her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Rosalean Hicks; one brother, Ruley Burns; and three sisters, Rogene A. Spinks, Mary A. Polk, and Anna W. Washington. The impact of her absence will be felt deeply by all who knew her, yet her legacy of love, fortitude, and service will continue to inspire.
A visitation will be held in her honor at C J Williams Mortuary Center, located at 1625 Monroe Street in Vicksburg, MS, on November 7, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM. This will be followed by her funeral service at Travelers Rest Baptist Church, 718 Bowmar Avenue, Vicksburg, MS, on November 8, 2025, at 2:00 PM.
Lurline's journey may have come to a close, but her spirit will forever shine brightly in the lives she has enriched.
