Isaac Smith, Jr., a devoted husband, loving father, esteemed civil engineering technician, and community leader, passed away peacefully on July 10, 2025, at the age of 97. Born on September 6, 1927, Isaac dedicated his life not only to his family but also to his profession and community.
From an early age, Isaac exhibited a strong work ethic that would follow him throughout his life. He graduated from Bowman High School while working at Sullivan’s Grocery Store, showcasing both his diligence and determination. Following his education, Isaac served proudly in the United States Air Force from 1947 to 1954, achieving the rank of Airman Second Class and gaining invaluable experiences that further shaped his character.
His professional journey led him to the Vicksburg District, where he began his engineering career under the guidance of Captain Daniels as a mess attendant on the Dredge Jadwin. This pivotal point set the stage for Isaac to make significant contributions to civil engineering. On June 20, 1953, with Captain Daniels' support, he joined the Waterways Experiment Station (WES) as a civil engineering technician. He dedicated 36 years of distinguished service at WES until his retirement on March 2, 1988. Isaac's crowning achievement came during his tenure at WES when he became the lead tester for the lunar rover wheels—a critical project that would leave a lasting mark on history as part of NASA's mission to land on the moon.
Isaac’s contributions transcended his professional endeavors; he was known for his quiet leadership and ability to bring people together. He played an instrumental role in securing federal funding to establish the first Head Start Program for Warren County, Mississippi, providing countless children with a robust start to their education. Even after retiring, he continued to be active in his community by working with Baker’s Security, reinforcing his commitment to serving others.
He was celebrated nationally for his lifetime of service and was honored in the 2004 National Campaign of Tolerance, with his name inscribed on the Wall of Tolerance in Montgomery, Alabama—a testament to his relentless pursuit of peace, justice, and perseverance.
In his personal life, Isaac took immense pride in his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Dorothy Smoote Smith; sister Delores Smith of Memphis, Tennessee; and a loving circle of children: Kathryn Bridges, Isaac Smith III (Zsa), Theresa Williams (Johnny), Maurice Smith, Christopher Brown, and his adopted son. His legacy continues through his nine grandchildren, Vernon Bridges, Jr., Justin Bridges, Amber Smith, Alexis Smith, Johnny J. Williams, Nicholas Brown, Joshua Brown, Jameson Brown, and Aiden Brown, as well as two great-grandchildren and many cherished nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.
Isaac was preceded in death by his father, Isaac Smith, Sr., and mother, Aurella Franklin Smith. He was also preceded by his brothers, Benjamin Smith and Charles Smith; sister, Artimese Smith Little; and step-sister, Maggie Vernon.
A visitation will be held in his honor at C J Williams Mortuary Center in Vicksburg, Mississippi, on July 18, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM. A Celebration of Life will follow on July 19, 2025, at 11:00 AM.
