Elijah Charles Hunt, Sr., affectionately known as E.C., passed away on October 21, 2025, at the age of 94. His warm spirit and steadfast dedication to his family and community will forever be cherished by those who knew and loved him.
Born on November 6, 1930, Elijah was a man of many talents and great passion. As a longtime plumber serving Vicksburg and its surrounding communities, he not only exemplified skill in his trade but also embodied the spirit of dedication to those around him. As an esteemed member of the Laborers’ International Union, his contributions to the industry were profound. His industrious nature was complemented by previous employment at Vicksburg Chemical Co., International Paper, and Anderson Tully, where he earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues.
E.C. had a heart that radiated warmth and kindness. He treasured the simple joys of life, finding happiness in hunting and fishing during his spare time. An avid fan of old Westerns, he cherished evenings spent reminiscing about classic films. Those long phone conversations with his beloved sister, Virgie, and his dear cousin, James, reflect the deep connections he nurtured throughout his life. E.C.'s personality was vibrant, and his love for people shone through in every conversation.
He leaves behind a devoted family who will forever hold his memory close. His son, Elijah C. (Patricia) Hunt, Jr., resides in Vicksburg, MS, while his daughters—Ida Louise Hunt in Buffalo, NY; Charlene S. (Willie) Lampkin and Carolyn (Rickey) Holden in Vicksburg, MS, and Muskegon, MI, respectively; Samantha Robinson of Missouri City, TX; Paula Hunt of Euless, TX; Donna Moore of Sugarland, TX; and Cesia Hunt of Houston, TX—will carry forward his legacy. His grandson, Joseph (Donya) Squire from Oakland, TN, along with granddaughters Brianna Cary Moore and Taylor Nicole Moore from Sugarland, TX, are among the multitudes who will miss his influence in their lives. His cherished great-grandsons, Tyler Squire of Fort Lewis, WA, and Jacob Squire of Oakland, TN, along with great-granddaughter Kimberly Squire from Oakland, TN, were sources of immense pride for E.C.
In addition to his immediate family, E.C. is survived by his sister, Virgie Baskerville of Los Angeles, CA, and his niece, Delores McGriggs of Glendale, CA, with whom he shared a special bond. He also leaves behind sisters-in-law Lee Ethel Turner of Richmond, CA, and Margaret Little of Meridian, MS, along with a special cousin, James Flaggs, Sr., and family friend Victor Carraway. The bonds he forged with many families—the Hunts, Slaughters, Littles, Carsons, Turners, Flaggs, McPhersons, Maces, Warfields, Bunleys, Browns, Fishers, Burks, Garretts, and Jacksons—are a testament to the lasting impact he made in the lives of others.
E.C. was preceded in death by his parents Levi and Joe Cary Carson Hunt and his paternal grandparents, Lee Grant Hunt and Hurley Hunt, as well as his maternal grandparents, Jack and Josephine Carson; his loving wife, Johnnie Mae Hunt, and his first wife, Ida M. Hunt Pollard, as well as his daughter, Bonnie Richardson (Narvel) Boyd, and his beloved grandson, Adrian Jackson.
