Clarice Butler, a beloved matriarch and an unwavering source of love and support for her family, passed away on July 5, 2025, at the age of 91. Born on April 26, 1934, Clarice was a guiding light to many who were fortunate enough to know her. Her contributions to her family and community were evident in every aspect of her life, marked by her deep-rooted passion for nurturing those around her.
Employed as a homemaker in private homes, Clarice embodied the essence of warmth and care, touching countless lives with her giving spirit. She was fiercely devoted to her family, often opening her home and her heart to those in need. Known for her caring nature, she was always willing to lend a helping hand, often putting others before herself. To her family, she was not just a mother; she was a mother to us all. Her love extended beyond mere words; it was demonstrated through her actions and unwavering support, making her an irreplaceable figure in their lives.
Clarice's personality shined brightly in social gatherings — she loved dancing and cherished the moments spent enjoying life with family and friends. The thrill of laughter and joy echoed through her home during get-togethers, and her fondness for the casinos added another layer of vibrancy to her life.
She leaves behind her precious daughters, Carolyn Butler, Senobia Butler, and Deborah Butler, all of Vicksburg, MS; her sons, Elvis Butler (Veronica) and Derrick Butler (Stephanie), also of Vicksburg; Cedric Butler and Lenard Butler, Jr. (Katrina) of Detroit, MI; and her sisters, Martha Lee Singleton of California, Annie Mae Richardson of Georgia, Rosie Griffin, Willie Mae Davis of Detroit, MI, Christine and Hattie Mae Henderson of Vicksburg, MS. Clarice was also a proud grandmother to forty-four grandchildren, eighty-one great-grandchildren, and thirty-three great-great-grandchildren, whose lives she enriched with her love.
Clarice held dear her daughters-in-law, Veronica Butler, Betty Jean Butler, Joyce Tyler, and Lola Hughes, all of Vicksburg, MS. Her family bonds extended to a special nephew, James Boler of New York, New York, and a vast network of nieces, nephews, and relatives, including the Tollivers, Hendersons, Neals Woods, and Wardleys. Among her cherished friends were Linda Blue Johnson and Dorothy Carson, who shared many joyful moments with her.
Though Clarice now joins her deceased loved ones, including Charles Hughes, Larry Butler, Sr., and Melvin Ray Butler, along with her daughters Zelia Butler, Sharon Butler, and Velva Gullette, and seven brothers and five sisters, her legacy will forever resonate through the hearts of her family. Her strength, wisdom, and God-fearing nature solidified her role as the true matriarch of the family. As we gather to celebrate her life, we are reminded of the indelible mark she has left on each of us.
