Charles R. Holmes, a beloved member of the Vicksburg community, passed away peacefully on March 4, 2026. Born on June 28, 1939, in Jefferson County, Mississippi, Charles was the cherished baby of his family, born to the late Fannie and Frazier R. Holmes, Sr. His life was marked by devotion to his faith, family, and the community he served so diligently.

Charles committed his life to Christ at an early age and was an active member of Holly Grove MB Church under the pastoral leadership of Reverend Robert Miller. Known for his loving and free-spirited nature, Charles had a genuine affection for people, always eager to engage and uplift those around him.

For 25 years, Charles dedicated his career to the U.S. Waterways Experiment Station in Vicksburg, contributing his talents and efforts to the betterment of his community. Beyond his professional life, he served his neighbors through various jobs, including taxi cab driving and plumbing, showcasing his versatility and willingness to help others in any capacity.

On August 21, 1975, Charles was united in holy matrimony with his beloved wife, Corine Williams. Together, they shared 50 years of marriage, a testament to their enduring love and commitment. From their union, five children were born: Charles Holmes, Jr., Tiffany Denise Holmes, Derral Holmes, Sr., Charles Holmes III, and Charles Holmes IV.

Charles’s life was also defined by the rich relationships he nurtured with his family. He is lovingly remembered by his wife Corine; sons Charles Jr., Abdul Lovett, and Kevin (Angela) Hanger; daughters Carolyn (Durrone) Moore and Juliette Washington; and a special great-granddaughter, Armani Holmes. He was also a cherished brother to Edwin Holmes and Huey (Marie) Holmes. Charles’s extended family includes numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends who all hold him dear in their hearts.

He was preceded in death not only by his parents but also by several family members who went before him, including his children Derral Holmes, Sr., Tiffany Denise Holmes, Charles Holmes III, Charles Holmes IV, and Tammy Richardson. He was also predeceased by seven siblings—Frazier R. Holmes, Jr., R. L. Tenner, Darnell Tenner (twice mentioned), William Holmes, Sr., Rosie Lee Cole, Emma Stampley, and Edith Lee—as well as a special nephew, William Holmes I; his uncle, Lethal Hudson; and aunts Lula Richardson and Ethel Smith of Greenwood, Mississippi.

Charles’s life will be celebrated with a visitation on March 27, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM at C J Williams Mortuary Center, located at 1625 Monroe Street in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Following this, a Celebration of Life service will be held on March 28, 2026, at Greater Grove Street M. M. church, 2715 Alcorn Dr. beginning at 11:00 AM, honoring a man whose warmth and spirit touched so many.

Charles R. Holmes leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and dedication that will continue to inspire all who knew him. His gentle soul and generous heart will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by his family, friends, and community.
