Azzie Mae Strong, born on May 19, 1950, in Utica, Mississippi, gracefully departed from this world on August 28, 2025. Azzie's life was a mosaic of compassion, resilience, and dedication, marked by her unwavering commitment to her profession and the profound connections she fostered throughout her life.
At the age of 24, Azzie embarked on a remarkable career as a Licensed Practical Nurse, a vocation that she cherished for over 51 years. Her journey in nursing was one not merely defined by the roles she occupied but enriched by the lives she profoundly transformed through her care. Azzie's legacy is illuminated by the numerous awards and honors bestowed upon her, each a testament to her tireless devotion and the countless hearts she touched with her gentle spirit and unyielding support.
Beyond her professional achievements, Azzie was enveloped in love by her devoted church family, fellow nurses, and those at Merit Health. The bonds she nurtured with lifelong friends and extended family members were equally significant, each relationship holding a special place within her heart and soul.
Azzie leaves behind three adoring children who will forever cherish her memory: Kita Strong of Vicksburg, MS; Kristen Swartz of Vicksburg, MS; and Kayla Strong of Houston, TX. She took immense pride in her role as a grandmother to her four beloved grandchildren: Jakala Watkins and Jordan Reed, gifted to her by her daughter Kristen, and Ashia Dixon and Ashton Whitman, the treasured grandchildren of her daughter Kita.
The strength of Azzie's family extends to her brothers, who remain: Richard Wesley Martin (Paulette), Rev. George Martin III (Mae B), Johnny B. Martin (Julia Mae), and Alonzo “Paul” Scott (Lashundra), all hailing from Utica, MS. Their collective memories shall serve as a comforting embrace of her enduring spirit. Furthermore, she is fondly remembered by a host of nieces, nephews, and relatives who will forever remain allies in the preservation of her legacy.
Azzie's absence will be felt profoundly, especially by those whose lives were enriched by her kindness and her unwavering compassion. Her journey has culminated in an indelible mark on the lives she touched and the hearts she influenced.
